What is paediatric medicine?
Paediatric medicine is the practice of providing medical care and preventative services for the physical, mental, and behavioral healthcare of infants, children, and adolescents from 0 to 18 years old. Paediatricians screen, prevent, diagnose, treat, and manage any health problem affecting young patients, especially focused on the growth rate and physical milestones of children, developmental issues, and their changing medical needs. They advise parents and guardians on the diagnosis, treatment, care, and medication needs for their children.
Nothing is more concerning to a parent than when their child becomes ill; even minor fevers and stomach aches can be very stressful for parents. We offer consultations and provide emergency room coverage for all of our young patients who need them. We have access to up-to-date specialists and diagnostic tools from MRI, ultrasounds, rapid laboratory testing, and coordinate care programs for serious and life-threatening conditions. We treat your child like one of our own.

You may wish to consult a paediatrician for your child if he or she is experiencing any of the following symptoms:
- abdominal pain, especially if on the right side
- difficulty swallowing and eating
- falls that cause swelling
- headache with fever or vomiting
- high fever or a fever that doesn’t come down
- skin rash or inflammation
Most babies and children do not have any serious health conditions, but paediatricians are educated to provide preventative health care from birth to age 18. Preventative care and well child care are highlighted skills that stress the importance of nutrition, exercise, and social interactions.
Besides prevention and wellness, we offer health screenings, immunizations, and minor ambulatory procedures. Any time one of our patients needs hospitalization, we coordinate the care with other specialists, keeping parents informed at all times. Our focus is to address all facets of the child’s well-being including behavioral, psychological, and emotional issues. While medication may be needed, there are a vast array of alternatives for many conditions and this may require routine and complex neuro-behavioral testing.

Babies are born with 300 bones, some of which fuse together as they grow up. For example, a newborn baby’s head grows by almost 50% from birth to age 5. That’s why it is important that the bones of the skull do not fuse together prematurely.
A baby’s skull has several bones that overlap during birth to help the baby come out of the birth canal. This can make the baby’s head look oblong at first. Head circumference is one of the most important measurements that a pediatrician measures, besides body weight and height.
