He started the use of all arterial grafts for CABG, minimal invasive CABG and off pump CABG in Singapore. He is well known as a cardiovascular surgeon in this region. He has special interest in the areas of Coronary Artery Surgery/CABG, Aortic Surgery, Aortic Root Surgery/Mitral Valve Reconstruction and Heart Transplantation. Dr Tong served as President of the Association of the Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgeons of Asia from 2013 to 2014, Secretary-General from 1993 to 2003. He also served as Chairman of the Medical Advisory Board, Mount Elizabeth Hospital, Singapore from 1995 to 2005. He was a member of the Medical Board, the Farrer Park Hospital, the SMC Complaints Committee, Singapore Medical Board and had been a member of The Specialist Accreditation Board, Specialist Training Committee for many years.
