Cardiology

Credentials MBChB MRCP (UK)
Language English,Mandarin Chinese,Hokkien Dialect
Background

Dr. Tan is the only cardiologist who is duo accredited in Interventional cardiology and echocardiology in Singapore.

Dr. Tan graduated from Leicester University (UK) in 1989. He then underwent training in various subspecialties and completed his cardiology training in 1999.

After which, he went over to Sydney, Australia to hone his skills in echocardiology. During the 1 year stay, he also published several papers in this sub-specialty. He is an accredited Echocardiologist certified to perform 2D echo, Treadmill stress echo, Dobutamine stress echo and Trans-oesophageal echocardiography. All the echo scans done in the clinic are personally vetted or performed by Dr. Tan.

After his sabbatical in Sydney, he returned to Singapore and worked in Changi General Hospital. During this time he also took up training in interventional cardiology. Instead of just attending a fellows’ course, Dr. Tan spent a whole year in Asan Hospital for his second sabbatical. This hospital is one of the world’s leaders in stenting the Left Main artery.

Upon returning to Singapore, Dr. Tan spearheaded intervention via the radial approach in Changi General Hospital. He has given many presentations in international meetings. He also has extensive experience in performing stenting of the left main artery and chronic total occlusion (arteries which have been completely blocked for a long time). He is one of very few cardiologists in Singapore who have opened up totally blocked arteries using the ‘retrograde’ approach. He also has a great wealth of experience in doing complex cases in patients who declined or are unsuitable for bypass surgery.

Being duo-accredited, Dr. Tan’s patients are assured of a well-balanced opinion. Maintaining a link with the academic centres also ensures that he remains on the cutting edge of technologies. Dr. Tan is still actively involved in research and teaching. He returns to the public institutions regularly to supervise, teach and perform both echo and interventional cases. He is also an invited faculty member for various international conferences.
