Background

Graduated with an MBBS degree from the National University of Singapore in 1995. He went on to specialise in the field of Ophthalmology and obtained the MMED (Ophth) in 2003 and postgraduate qualifications from Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (FRCSEd).

He is a Consultant Surgeon in Cataract and Comprehensive Ophthalmology and subspecialises in the field of Vitreoretinal Diseases. His main expertise is in the fields of age-related macular degeneration (AMD), diabetic retinopathy, retinal vascular diseases, inherited retinal disorders and diagnostic visual electrophysiology. He has also performed numerous advanced small incision cataract (phaco-refractive) surgeries with wavefront, toric and multifocal intraocular lenses, and femto-laser bladeless LASIK & Epi-LASIK procedures.

Achievements

Dr Cheng also has special interest in electrophysiology, having trained with Professor Graham Holder at the world-renowned Moorfields Eye Hospital. He has been invited to give lectures and teaching workshops at many meetings around the region on areas of medical retina and retinal imaging. Dr Cheng is also an adjunct research scientist with the Singapore Eye Research Institute (SERI), clinical teacher with the National University of Singapore (NUS) and part-time consultant at the Singapore National Eye Centre (SNEC).

He is involved in many pioneering research projects in drugs and in collaboration with many international instituitions for research. He has also published in many peer-reviewed scientific papers. Recently, Dr Cheng was appointed into the  Vitreo-retina subspecialty committe, College of Ophthalmologists and representative for Ophthalmology Mount Alvernia operation committee.
